On April 30, 2023, Alabama Dames travelled to Glendale Christian Church Cemetery at Glendale, Kentucky, to mark Honorary State President Twyla Dianne Froman Brammell’s grave. The ceremony began with the procession of program participants to “Ode of Joy” played by violinist Thomas Barton, Honorary State President Alabama Children of the American Revolution.
Alabama State President Hicks welcomed members and guests. The invocation was given by
State Chaplain Elizabeth Gillian.. The Colors were presented by State Treasurer Susan Dooley and State Page Chair Melissa Walton Webb. The National Anthem was led by State Corresponding Secretary Anne Parramore accompanied by Thomas Barton . The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America was led by Honorary State President Phyllis O’Connell. The Salute to the Flag of Colonial Dames XVII Century was led by State Corresponding Secretary Ashley Barton. The American’s Creed was led by Second Vice President Mary Anne Kane-Garrett. The Object of the Society was led by Cherokee Chapter President Evelyn Newsome.
Mailed Remembrances were read. Tributes were offered by State President Deborah Hicks, Recording Secretary General and Honorary State President Janet Langley, President General Yvonne Hiteshue, Honorary President General and Honorary State President Mary Johnston, and Kentucky Dame and childhood friend Susan McCrobie. Ms McCrobie related an early memory of Twyla when they would go to the playground
“a place where age did not matter; a place where being in the
moment mattered, moments filled with friends, fun and laughter.
Life held such great promise. Our playground was a place where
you could race to reach the heavens as you pumped your legs to
go higher and higher from a quickly snatched swing seat while
holding on ,oh so tightly to the chains. Reaching heaven has a
different meaning as we grow wiser.”
Susan’s comments reminded me of the poem Birches by one of my favorite poets, Robert Frost.
May we all be swinger of birches and live in the moment.
State Chaplain Elizabeth Gillian read the scriptures that Twyla had chosen for her 2011-2013 administration. She read the grave marker dedication and blessing, after which Janet Langley and Deborah Hicks unveiled the marker. Thomas Barton played Amazing Grace and Anne Parramore sang a cappella “The Lord’s Prayer”. Those attending sang Bless Be the Tie That Binds. The Colors were retired. Wreaths from the State Society and the Mary Moore Postell Chapter were displayed beside the flags and open Bible. State Photographer Sarah Curtis took pictures. The collage was created by Susan Dooley.

The marker was dedicated on September 23, 1992. Mrs John Faulk, Jr. was State Chairman of Marking & Preservation of Historic Sites for the society and Mrs. Shelby Dean Ward was State President of the society. The ASCDXVIIC graciously erected this sign after a similar sign at this location had been vandalized. It is located on Hwy 22 at the turn-off to Old Cahawba.
